Online Businesses Mean You are Online with Life

Online business opportunities abound on the Internet these days. You could web host, join an affiliate program, offer a service, or simply market someone else's product. These businesses all promise to offer significant revenue and freedom to the owner who is willing to take a risk and run his or her own online business. These businesses offer some unique advantages over run of the mill jobs, and these perks can make life much sweeter for the owner as well as the owner's family and loved ones.

Online businesses afford job security. When you are your own boss, you never have to worry someone will fire you. You would never fire you. When you are your own boss, you will not lay yourself off, and you will not criticize yourself unfairly. You can choose whether you need additional employees, but you never have to be at someone else's mercy for your weekly pay. Online businesses also afford satisfaction. When you are your own boss, you set your own goals and standards. You can experience the success and high of an achieved goal daily when you choose and meet your own goals based upon what is most important to you. This opportunity, guaranteed with an online business, means you fulfill your own dreams and goals and go to bed satisfied at the end of the day. Gone are the days of running around the cubicle like a hamster on the wheel, never really meeting quota because quota is always placed just outside your reach. With an online business, you choose quota, and you choose what you will do to get there.

An online business will get you online and on track with your life. You can choose where you will spend your time and effort. You can choose when you will work and when you will play. When important obligations arise outside of the confines of work, you have the freedom and flexibility with an online business to be where your heart tells you you should be. Many types of online business will continue to make money for you even while you sleep. When you do Internet marketing, you will find you make money every time someone who works with you makes money. You will see success in many ways. When you run a web site affiliate program, every time someone visits a website from you're link, you make money. You need never meet the people who are earning you money, but they will be within the reach of a simple keystroke. You have choices and freedoms with an online business, and you can be the person you want to be. An online business gets you online with your life, just the way you want it.

Starting Your Home Based Business On A Shoestring Budget

Whether seeking a supplemental income or a full-time income, many folks have undertaken the task to discover a viable home based business solution to meet their personal needs.

For most folks who contemplate a home business, a low-cost or no-cost solution is not only nice, but also very necessary. Many also seek to find a home business that will permit them to maintain their regular day job in order to protect their base income.

Taking the cautious approach to a home based business and keeping one's job during the start-up period is often a very good decision. By maintaining one's job, one can maintain the health of their personal finances while permitting their home business grow healthy and strong.

Fortunately, most home based businesses can be started with little or no cash, can be maintained on a shoestring budget, and can be operated successfully with only a part-time investment.

One day, the business will be strong enough to support itself and its owner. When that time comes, it will make good sense for the business owner to leave his or her outside job to dedicate more time to growing and maintaining their new thriving home based business. You will know when that time has finally arrived.

The nature of a home based business makes it easy and very realistic for most folks to take the plunge into home business ownership.

Yet, many folks put off starting their own home based business, because they have the misconception that they will have to risk thousands of their own hard-earned dollars at start-up. Then later, if their business fails, they fear they may be forced to take out a second mortgage on their house just to stay out of bankruptcy.

Are you one of these folks? Do you let your fears of failure keep you from reaching for your dreams?

If so, then allow me to introduce you to a few home business ideas that you can start for less than $100 and can be started and operated very profitably as a part-time business.

THE LIFEBLOOD OF ALL SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES

First of all, let me advise you to search out a business model that will deliver steady and repeat business. It is the one thing --- above all others --- that will assure that your company can survive the test of time.

HOME-BASED MAIL ORDER: Home-based mail order is a good example of how one can quickly grow a home business income. Mail order is a low cost start-up business that can be launched for around $100 USD.

With proper planning, your home-based mail order business will not require up-front inventory purchases. In the mail order business, it is not uncommon to rely upon drop-shippers for product fulfillment services.

By utilizing drop-shippers, we can sell the products, collect the money and then purchase the products from the wholesale outlet. The wholesale outlet will then put a return address for your company on the product packaging and deliver the product directly to your customer.

By using the following link, you can explore the drop-ship directory, which will let you explore the drop-shipping companies that will enable you sell 500,000 products from over 1,000 brand name manufacturers:

http://www.home-business.com/dropship.html

Your primary expense in the mail-order business is advertising. Classified advertising tends to be a relatively inexpensive form of advertising with thousands of outlets available to the small business owner.

WHOLESALE BUSINESS: Buy low --- sell high. You can acquire high quality, top-of-the-line merchandise for a fraction of the retail cost. Starting a wholesale business would require a Wholesale Dealers Directory as your source for merchandise, such as the one above or the one listed here:

http://www.home-business.com/auction.html

AUCTIONS: Auctions can be an excellent source for buying cheap and selling high. Both government auctions and Internet auctions can lead to some excellent profit opportunities. Auctions are an excellent tool for both acquiring and selling merchandise.

MAKE AND SELL YOUR CRAFTS: Crafts are a hot seller at country fairs, swap meets or anyplace where people gather. Make your own crafts and sell them for a tidy profit!

SELLING INFORMATION: Selling information by mail is another good example of an inexpensive home based business start-up. One can gain the resale rights to information for usually about $50 USD. Other costs will include printer cartridges, paper and postage. There are plenty of free classifieds sites on the Internet, in which to successfully advertise your information.

WRITE INFORMATIONAL BOOKLETS: Write and publish your own informational booklets; sell them at a high price! All you need is a little know-how, a printer, paper and stamps. This is a GREAT home business idea! You can also sell the resale rights to others, for extra profits. In this age of the Internet, you may also take advantage of the fact that selling information is one of the most profitable endeavors one can pursue online.

OFFICE SERVICES: Offer office services for hire in your local paper. You'll be surprised at the amount of regular office business that can be gleaned from one little classified ad. Word processing, typing, accounting, data entry, proofreading, transcription, promotional letters and newsletters. All these tasks can be accomplished right from your own home office.

AVON REPRESENTATIVE: Yes, Avon's been around for eternity, hasn't it? Then it's not such a bad prospect as a home based business, is it? I once knew a woman who did so much business as an Avon rep. that she had people calling her and knocking at her door wanting to order products at all hours of the day and night! Once you are an established Avon representative, you, too, will turn a good profit.

CONCLUSION: On your search for the ideal home based business, try not to get caught up in any scams that will run off with your money. There are thousands of scam artists out there just waiting for the next sucker to come along. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Just use your good judgement and invest wisely in proven methods of earning extra income.

How to Turn Your Passion into Online Profit

If you want to start a new home based business hundreds of websites will spoil you for choices. A new business idea is born every second and a large number of these are potentially profitable ones. But on any given day, if you think of turning a hobby into a business, its chances of succeeding increase many-fold. Why? Because you are passionate about it and like to do it.

Turning your hobby into a profitable business is one of the best home business opportunities you can get. Imagine doing what you like and getting paid for it! There ain't a better dream come true. However, if you dont keep your feet on the ground, your dream can turn a fairly frightening responsibility and such a chore. Take this reality check to see if you are ready for getting into business and if your hobby can realistically be turned into a profitable idea.

  1. Research your hobby: Does turning your hobby into a business fill a real need gap? Is there anyone out there who would want to buy your products? If yes, then are there enough people who can constitute a sizeable market for you to keep your business profitable? Is there an economical way to market and distribute your products or services?
  2. Market Research: When you ask questions like the ones above, the answers will come from some in-depth market research. Spend considerable time staking out your market. Research over the Internet. Find out if there is anyone selling your kind of products already? If yes, what has been their success rate? What kind of people would constitute your target market? Is this market big enough to keep you profitable? What are the price points for your product? What are the selling mechanics for your product on the Internet? (Since thats where you are going to base your business)
  3. Make a business plan: A good way to determine whether your hobby can turn into a money making proposition is to draw out a full-fledged business plan. You can get free business plan templates from www.bplans.com . Do some number crunching. This would typically include financial forecasts dealing with questions like start up capital and where can you raise it from, the gestation period for the business, income generation and forecasts.
  4. Are you geared up for business? Take stock of your own business sense. Are you comfortable with the risks and the cyclical nature of business? When running a business, not every day is Sunday. There can be some bad days too and they may last longer than youd expect them to. What are your managerial and administrative capabilities? Would you still love your hobby if it became you main income source? Take a look at this website for more:

    http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol6/considerations.htm

  5. Decide how much time can you devote: Before you get all set for wading out into the great ocean of home business, ask yourself, how much time can you realistically spend on your business? If you think making it a full time activity would mean being away from your family more often and not acceptable to you, make it a part time venture. A fledgling business is like a small baby. It demands your complete attention all the time. Are you up to that?
  6. Find an innovative business angle: Just because a hobby is fun for you, doesnt mean someone will pay you to do it. Youd have to do more than just plain sell your services and hope to make enough money. The trick is finding the twist that will turn your recreation into an income.

With the Internet opening up a new marketing landscape, it has become easier for home business owners to do business. So building an online business based on your hobby can provide you with a nich with a large demand and little competition to supply to it. That can make the road to success easier.

Here are some guidelines to get you started:

1. Build a professional website: Your business is based on a hobby, alright. But having a website that doesnt look professional reflects badly on your business. Unless you have the capability to build your own website, you must hire the services of a web designing company to build you a site that fulfils all your website goals and looks professional. Take a look at: http://www.oncallgeeks.com/ for some more information on what it takes to have a knock out website.

2. Populate the site with useful content: Content is king on the Internet. Unless you give your visitors something useful via content, they are not very likely to stick around your website, much less buy from you.

3. Use the website as an online brochure of your services and products

4. Since you will be using the website to sell your products make sure that the pages are easily navigable and the layout is comprehensible

5. Promote your website: Use reciprocal links, search engine optimization, viral marketing and other online marketing strategies to increase visibility and traffic to your website.

One great disadvantage of chucking it all for a new business is that if it works; great. If it crashes it takes you down with it. But with careful planning and sound judgement of your own capabilities you can make it work.

Protecting Your Home Based Business Idea

Got a great home based business idea? Wonderful. But do you know how to protect your amazing home based business idea? Well, protecting your home based business idea is a whole different arena. Sometimes it is hard to think that we would need to gain protection over something as abstract as our home based business idea, but depending on the business, it could be vital.

Knowing that a home based business idea can sometimes be equated with property is vital to taking the right steps to protect your home based business idea. If you have a great home based business idea that is vital to the business itself, then you should not put off protecting it. You never know when someone else will have that same home based business idea later on.

Filing your home based business idea for protection under the U.S. patent, trademark, and copyright laws is imperative if your business will depend on that great home based business idea. The difficult thing is to decide whether you should get a patent, trademark, or copyright for your home based business idea. Each category protects a different kind of intellectual property, like your home based business idea. Plus, your home based business idea could even require all three or none at all.

Also, do not be fooled into believing that getting a patent, trademark, or copyright for your home based business idea will guarantee a successful business. Dont spend money your business does not have in order to try to protect your home based business idea if you do not know that people will use the service or buy the product.

When looking at your home based business idea, you should also be cautious of others intellectual property. Making sure you check your home based business idea against others at the U.S. Patent and Trademark office and the U.S. Copyright office can be important. There is always some copying that goes on in business, but you want to make sure acting on your home based business idea does not place you in danger of being sued.

Protecting your home based business idea is up to you. However, if you do have a business that relies on your home based business idea, say an invention, then you need to research protecting your home based business idea through trademark, patent, or copyright. Also, be smart and make sure you are not stealing someone elses concept before you move ahead with your home based business idea.

Managing Your Home Based Online Business 7

Your Home Business Management- Conclusion

In the previous articles, I've mentioned some of the key elements of managing your online business when you are working at home: finance, marketing, time, purchasing and computing, plus of course the need to manage yourself. This series has been about the need to manage your business, even if you do work at home alone, rather than just let it drift with the flow of the days, weeks, months and years.

For this last part in the series, I will partially recap, but also add in a few more suggestions that may help you deal with the transition from employee to own business manager. Of course, this is a subject I could write a book about, so this short series has been merely an introduction, to get you thinking about your business in a slightly different light to the way you might have done. I hope the following points may assist in that process:

Always be patient and do not expect instant results. The business world is not like that. Maybe over the years you will have one or two lucky breaks, but do not expect them soon.

Take a long term view of the business from the outset. This may be your one opportunity to do things right and make a decent income with the freedom of working from home. Set yourself a target for 5 years time, then the stepping stones to that target will emerge, one year at a time. Looking ahead 5 years you can set your targets high without being unrealistic.

Always remember that the knowledge you are acquirin g will be a growing asset. All of a sudden you may find others viewing you as something of an expert, and you will realise you have knowledge that is valuable, not only to you but to others.

A piece of knowledge is like a building block. Add these building blocks you are making one at a time. Remember, if you try to put a roof on a building before the walls are in place, it wont be much of a building. Be patient in placing one block at a time, and theres a good chance you will stand proudly in front of this building in awe and think: wow, I did that! And the roof will be snugly in place.

Spread your learning across all parts of the business, especially those you dont like. Never forget, every part of your business is inter-related. You need to be able to piece them together and bind them strongly.

You will make mistakes, so do not expect otherwise. Marketing in particular will require risk and experiment. Before diving in and inflating your expectations, find out what others are experiencing from what you are wanting to try. Then there will be fewer disappointments and unpleasant surprises.

Frequent some of the online forums that focus on online business. There are many of them, and some are excellent for making new contacts, posing questions and getting valuable answers and suggestions. You will be surprised how much practical help, support and advice you will get from some forums.

When you make mistakes or things go wrong in some way, do not blame others. You are the boss of this business of yours, the buck stops with you.

Do not over criticize yourself or react emotionally when things do go wrong. Analyze what has happened and put it down to experience. It could have been the most important mistake you ever made, by forcing a change that will lead to your success.

Extract every positive you can from every negative event in your business life.

Never convince yourself you know better than everyone else. You dont.

Never assume that all those who are making a lot of money on the internet are out to get you. Learn from their successes, even if it means adding to their income by working in their downline. It is your job to make money, earn a good living, and succeed, not to resent making money for someone else in the process.

When you try something new, do so in moderation, whether it be a new ad or new advertising medium, or some traffic generation system. Online or offline, many things dont work as you had dreamt they might. Test, review and then continue if neutral, making changes that may turn the test from neutral to positive. If positive, consider expansion. If negative, stop, unless there is a substantial reason for doing otherwise. This is all part of the business building process: discard what does not work, and improve and expand on things that do. But ensure the timescale you have set is sensible.

Monitor everything. Its a fast moving world. What may be good for your business today may not be so in 3 months time.

Enjoy yourself. If you do not enjoy yourself, change things so that you do.

The above list is far from exhaustive, but reflects some of the things I have learnt over many years of having my own business, working online and offline, after moving from employee status in 1995. I hope that these ideas may help you in some little way towards your goal. By having a management attitude towards your business and yourself from the start, when the day comes to employ staff and delegate, then you will be better prepared and your business will have a firmer foundation. A new level of management will begin.

Roy Thomsitt is the owner, webmaster and author of http://www.change-direction.com , a new website in late 2004, about working online in a home based business. He has a background in offline advertising, with practical experience of working from home in marketing since 1995, plus 2 years of experience with online marketing. Professionally, he was trained as a management accountant and has substantial background in financial and project management, implementing new office, accounting, computer and management systems.

5 Common Mistakes Every Online Business Owner Should Avoid

Starting an online business is probably one of the simplest things to do. You make the decision that you want to make some money on the internet. You join a few free affiliate programs, maybe a couple of free mlm programs and if youre really into it, you get your own domain name and web site.

So far your business expenses are peanuts and you can close shop anytime without any regrets. You dont have a vested interest in your business due to the lack of a financial commitment. Thats how about 80% of the so called online business owners operate. No concept, no plan and no future.

Then theres another group of online business owners who are all fired up about their new Endeavour and nothing can stop them. They do everything theyve been told by whom ever they listen to and they also spend a considerably amount of money to get their business going. Theres really nothing wrong with this other than that they are too eager and too motivated to get their business off the ground. Unfortunately most of them will quite after a few months. Unfortunately this is mostly due to avoidable mistakes.

The third and smallest group are the folks who actually made it. Well, let me define made it for a moment. I call a business a success if you can make a profit after you paid all the expenses and I mean all the expenses. Now you can argue if it is worthwhile to put in so much work for not much in return. This is a call that every one of you has to make on your own.

I purposely left out the group with the guys who are making more money a day than most of us make in a year. First, it is completely unrealistic to assume that you actually will achieve the same results as the big ones with the limited resources you have. Second, these guys may have started as a one man show, but today they are a corporation with many employees like every other company doing big business on the internet.

Back to the 3 groups I mentioned before. Group #1, the no concept, no plan, no future group, is not even worth mentioning. They are just a waste of time. Group #3, the guys who made it, is out o reach at the moment. The fact that youre reading this article puts you into the group #2 category. Youre eager to build your business and youre determined to make it happen. I hope by pointing out the pitfalls you will actually avoid the mistakes I made and it will bring you a step closer to your ultimate goal. Be your own boss.

Heres a list of common mistakes every startup online business should avoid.

1. Not Having a Plan

Set yourself a goal on where you want to be in 12 months after starting your online business. Without a plan, even the simplest plan, your ambitions are poised to fail.

2. Not Having Your Own Web Site

Get your own domain name and web site. There are many marketers who want you to believe that you can make lots of money without having your own web site. Make a professional staement and get your own domain name and web site.

3. Too Many Activities to Manage

Pick your affiliate and mlm programs wisely. Most newcomers fail due to the lack of focus. Too many programs will not increase your chances of hitting the jackpot. Focus on the most effective programs and stick with it. You will be rewarded in the long run.

4. Spending Too Much Money Too Quickly

Spending your hard earned money on advertising can quickly turn into an addiction. Meaning that you fall for the myth that the more you spend on advertising the more money you make. Wrong. You could spend all the money in the world on the wrong marketing strategy and still not making a profit. This will happen to you with all the pay-per-click search engines. Theres a reason why Google is skyrocketing at the stock market. There are too many advertisers spending too much money on pay-per-click and are not realizing that the only winner is Google themselves. The only thing that will stop this behavior is you either run out of money or your credit card is maxed out. My advice, pay-per-click is the last part of a well planned marketing strategy. There are much more effective advertising vehicles available than pay-per-click.

5. Dont SPAM

This is single most reason why startup online businesses get in trouble and actually have to close and start all over again. If you have a newsletter or some other information you want to distribute via email. Only use verified email addresses, typically double opt-in email addresses that you collected. Stay away from any brokers who want to sell you huge lists of emails for pennies. This is the surefire way to get into trouble and out o business. My advice, slowly grow your email list with verified addresses only. These people actually want to hear from you and are more likely to buy from you.

Unfortunately I didnt have this information when I started my online business and I paid for making these mistakes. Dont do what I did, do what Im telling you to do. Sounds familiar? Well in this case it is just a recap of my experiences and hopefully you get some use out of this.

Sincerely,
Peter Dobler

Managing Your Home Based Online Business 4

Working at home in a business on your own, and having responsibility for managing yourself and all the specialist functions of the business, has been my theme for the last 3 articles in this series.

One of the most important departments in any company is the marketing department. That particular specialist function is one that is critical to any business, small or large, online or offline. Now you are working alone in your own internet business, you are the one who has to know:

what internet marketing options are open to you;

how to select which ways to promote your business and website;

how you will budget for your advertising and other internet promotions;

how you will monitor the success of your different internet and advertising promotions once they get started.

how to manage the marketing of your business so that it is synchronized with the other key aspects of the business, especially finance.

Internet marketing is a massive and ever changing subject, so I will make absolutely no attempt to cover it in detail here. There is a considerable amount of material available for free on the internet. All I can say is: absorb as much as you can and then try to take a down to earth view of it. That is what I have done in the past, and have not got my fingers burnt with the internet marketing ebooks I have paid for.

You are very likely to find that marketing is a major expense in your online business, whether it be on information, advertising, or time saving products and services. If you spend a lot of time online researching internet marketing, you will be exposed to a cascade of options. Some of those options will be a magnet for your wallet, others will just be a waste of your valuable time; some will be both. This is why you will benefit from viewing things as a manager would, especially when wearing the finance hat.

If you do not manage your new online business, it will mismanage you and your bank account. You cannot risk going with the flow, when you are totally unaware of where the flow is heading, and that is especially true of marketing. However, all marketing has an element of risk, as has starting your own business. Finding the right balance is not easy.

How Do You Manage Your Marketing?

Achieving the right balance requires a management skill, even though you may never before have seen it that way. Where do you apply that management skill and how? I suggest you at least bear the following in mind at all times:

Managing your business is an attitude of mind; an awareness. If you can elevate yourself to thinking as a manager, even though you have nobody other than yourself to manage, then you are setting yourself up to be a better and more successful business owner.

Critically examine all requirements, or temptations, to spend money on marketing. If the marketer in you is anxious to spend, you should stand back from that and take a balanced view. Examine your proposed spend again the next day. You may have a different and more circumspect view next time.

Having a marketing budget is important. Try to stick to it, but be prepared to increase it out of profits if something is going well.

Evaluate all marketing options in terms of your budget, time, risks and expectations.

Be very selective about the marketing options you choose to utilize, and then ensure you have a way of tracking their effectiveness. If you dont, and youre trying a number of options at once, you will not have much of a clue as to what is successful and worth continuing, and what should be dropped from your marketing mix.

Be prepared to stop any marketing campaign that is not getting results within a reasonable time scale, but also try to make a sound judgement on what is a reasonable timescale. It is as bad to prematurely stop a campaign that could have been successful the following month, as it is to carry on with a campaign you should have stopped.

Review the effectiveness of your marketing efforts regularly, at least monthly but preferably weekly. Keep your finger on the pulse of the business.

This has just been a brief introduction to managing your online business marketing. In any business, getting the marketing right is crucial. Online marketing, with its thick veil of hype, is particularly hazardous. As you develop more of a management attitude, you will find it that much easier to see through the hype, and nurture your business through the many steps to success.

Fallacies Regarding Online Home Based Businesses

In the course of my home business coaching activities, I have often found that people head into the startup of their online home based businesses with a wildly unrealistic mindset.

Many have been told that they can sign up for a few programs, build a website around them, add a bunch of banners and links onto their site, then sit back and watch the money roll in and never have to work again.

There is a misconception that you can come online and set up an Internet based business and be making big money within a few days. This is absolute hogwash and it has not been my experience nor the experience of anyone I have come in contact with through my online business activities.

The harsh reality is that there are more people who fail at their home businesses than there are people who actually succeed.

Newcomers to the world of online home based business are not usually aware that they may actually have to work harder at their home businesses than they did at their traditional jobs. They are typically not aware of the many hours of marketing time that they will need to put in to be successful.

Many people that are new to online marketing also make the mistake of thinking that a single marketing strategy will suffice. Naturally, some avenues will produce better results than others, but I have found the best course of action is to adopt a broad based approach to your online marketing by spreading your time and resources over several different methods.

If you are new to Internet marketing, you might be well advised to take a course to find out what is required of you to be successful in an online business. It does not matter what type of business you are starting, if it is online, it must be marketed online, and possibly offline as well.

It always amazes me how frequently people that start an online home based business actually believe that they can get rich by doing absolutely nothing, or at least with very little effort. These are otherwise intelligent people. Why would they believe this? My conclusion is that they believe because they want to believe. They believe because they see claims to this effect everyday and everywhere on the Internet. They are told that it is possible. They not only want to believe it, for their own reasons, but they need to believe it.

In my opinion, you need to give yourself at least a year to make an online business get some traction and start to generate some meaningful income. The proper mindset is to think long term, not instant gratification.

I am always surprised at the number of people who drop out of their online home based business after the first month or two. I ask myself, what do they expect, miracles? You probably wouldn't bail out of offline business after a month so why would you expect an online business to be any different?

Aside from the fallacy of instant riches without any effort, the expectation of a free ride is a frequent misconception of many that think they want to start an online home based business. If you're afraid, or unwilling, to invest a little money to start your own business...you are not looking at a home based business...you are looking at a work at home job. If you want to make money online, you must also be willing to invest in yourself. It's as plain and simple as that.

Managing Your Home Based Online Business - 1

Working at home in their own business is something millions of people strive for and dream of, but most in the Western world never actually get around to doing it. For those who do achieve it, how do they adapt if they have changed, for example, from an office environment, where they were employed, had a strict routine imposed on them, and were told what to do all the time by those above them in the company?

How do you manage working alone from home? Now, that is not "manage" in the "how do you get by?" sense. It is manage in the manager/staff sense. You work at home alone, you are the boss of your home based business. So who or what is there to "manage"?

The profitability of any business, sole proprietor or multinational, depends on the successful management of a number of omnipresent departments: marketing, finance, human resources, computing, purchasing, and, if appropriate, research and development, and production.

If you are working at home, alone, online, you have all those management responsibilities and functions rolled into one. Your management task is perhaps the most difficult of all. You have to manage yourself. If you have never thought about it like that, then I suggest you consider it for a while. To run a successful business, you need to have a grasp of all the elements of that business, and how they interlink. That is as true with a home based online business as it is with a large corporation. Managing all those different elements of the business, I think you will find, is not as easy as it may sound. Managing yourself is definitely not as easy as it may sound.

Working at home for many can mean an escape from the managers above them who may have made their lives a misery, or at least less satisfying, for all of their previous career. But does working at home mean an escape from management altogether? No, it does not. At least, if you want a more profitable home based business, then management will be every bit as important as before. In fact, more important.

Why more important? Now it is your business. If you had shares in a company, would you not want good management to increase profits and thus your dividend and capital? Of course you would. You are not earning profits for others, unless you have family responsibilities. Okay, you will pay taxes, but that's not your biggest concern when you get started. You just want to get started and make some profits.

Having achieved your dream of a home online business, you want it to succeed. You will have an online business that will belong to you. You are the boss, and the expert on all aspects of running the business. You have your freedom at last, now you need to manage your new business in a way that will ensure it grows and prospers.

With you as manager and staff, these things will all be so easy.........won't they? Maybe not. Having your own business, especially based at home and alone, is not necessarily as straight forward as you may have thought. Just ask yourself for now, if you were a manager before, were you a good manager? As a subordinate, were you a good member of staff, someone your bosses respected and could rely on? Ask yourself. Be honest and ask some of your former co-workers, who should be honest too. Listen to any conflicts. You will have to deal with those conflicts as manager and staff.

Really? Yes, really! You have to deal with yourself. You are the boss and the staff. The best staff are those who follow instructions, work hard in their allotted time, work efficiently in what they are doing, and apply all the knowledge and training they have. They are also going to flourish by coming forward with good ideas and having them listened to.

The best managers give clear instructions and communicate their expectations of their staff. They also explain why certain things are done and paint the broader picture to enlighten their staff about what their role means. They also know when to listen to the ideas of others, including staff, and when to buy in expertise. Are you able to fulfil both roles?

By being aware of the need to manage the finance, marketing, purchasing and the other departments of your online business, you are part of the way to managing your business more effectively. If you can learn to compartmentalise, in your own mind, those same departments then you will be taking another step along the same road. If you can devote time to learning more about those departments, becoming an expert in each, and also learn what you can about management, then you will be a powerful manager of your online business.

Who will benefit from that? You, and those you support and care for. Does that not make the effort worth it?

Are You In The Right Online Business?

Did you select the right online business to pursue? People that are struggling find it difficult to admit they are possibly in the wrong business. Fortunately for everyone, many bad decisions can be corrected if recognized early enough. This article is intended to help you understand the available opportunities and hopefully improve your chances for future success.

Supply And Demand!

Everyone knows that the Internet is huge. Commerce (buying and selling) on the Internet is growing by leaps and bounds. It is controlled by the actions of the buyers and sellers. There is no traffic cop that makes decisions for each buyer and seller. The buyers and sellers are fr*ee to make their own decisions and pursue their own self-interests.

The Internet market is held in check by the economic principle of supply and demand. Buyers behave (demand) in a way to make buying decisions that will maximize their satisfaction. Sellers behave (supply) in a way that will maximize their profits. In a completely fr*ee market economy, buyers and sellers interact to determine the price of the product being exchanged.

Why Do People Buy On The Internet?

In order to understand the actions of buyers and sellers on the Internet, the following question needs to be answered: Why do people buy on the Internet? Simply stated, People buy on the Internet because of the ease, efficiency, availability, price and fun of purchasing the product or service online.

What Internet Opportunities Exist?

There are many types of profitable business opportunities to consider on the Internet. The major opportunities considered in this article are:

  • Join and promote an affiliate program.
  • Write and sell your own electronic book (ebook).
  • Start an electronic newsletter (ezine).
  • Open an online store.

What Is Included In Each Internet Opportunity?

The following is a summary level review of each opportunity:

1. Join and Promote an Affiliate Program:

In this business, you establish a relationship with the owner of an existing online product or service for sale. You become an affiliate of the owner. As the affiliate, you are allowed to promote and sell the product or service for a commission on the sale. This can be an easy business to start. It is a good choice if you do not have your own product to sell. The owner is happy to pay the commission because your sale is revenue they probably would not receive without your help.

2. Write and Sell Your Own eBook:

In this business, you sell the ebook that you wrote. Most people believe they do not have the ability to develop a topic and write an ebook. This is an incorrect belief. You have the ability if you can think, speak and read. The basic requirements to write a successful ebook are:

  • Need an objective.
  • Need to identify a niche market.
  • Need a killer topic.
  • Need the desire to write your thoughts.

If you do not have the appropriate knowledge, you can develop an ebook by using the help of an expert. The expert provides you with content for the ebook and you write the ebook.

3. Start an Electronic Newsletter:

In this business, you become the publisher and editor of an electronic newsletter (ezine). The newsletter can be published as often as you like whether its daily, weekly or monthly. The frequency depends on how often you can deliver content of value to your subscribers. Distribution of the newsletter through email is generally based on an opt-in list of subscribers. The typical newsletter will contain: editorial by the publisher, tips and recommendations, featured article, advertisements, and links to specific affiliations.

4. Open an Online Store:

In this business, you either setup your own website store or rent a storefront site in an established Internet mall. The Internet store requires a website, products to sell, a shopping cart and the ability to accept customer payments. It is possible to have built-in traffic if you are part of an Internet mall.

Conclusion!

Each business has a definite set of activities to be performed in order to be successful.

Your success in a specific business is dependent on how well you perform these activities.

You should select an online business to pursue based on your:

  • Interests
  • Motivation
  • Time
  • Energy
  • Commitment

Make a complete evaluation of the opportunities available before you make a decision.

Do not expect great results if you do not get excited about your business and put the necessary time and energy into your online business!

Low interest, low motivation or low commitment will lead to bad or less than acceptable results!

Examine closely what you want to achieve out of your online experience.

Take the extra time now and it may make a big difference in your future success.

Make the right decision and you have a very good chance to succeed!

Make the wrong decision and you probably will fail like so many others!

Maximize Your Home Based Business Website Sales

A home based business often has a harder time getting people to buy from their website than a conventional or top-brand business does. Sometimes this is simply due to the name recognition of a major brand that a home based business doesnt have. But many times its because a home based business website owner hasnt done all he or she can do to maximize their chances of making sales.

The look of a home based business website is vital to making sales. Advertising and marketing for any type of business, home based business or conventional, depends on appearance. How people perceive your home based business product or service makes a big difference in whether or not theyll buy from you. In other words, if your home based business website looks like you just threw it up overnight, dont expect to make a lot of sales because people probably wont view you as a reliable, reputable business. So you want your home based business website to look as professional as it possibly can.

Another thing that helps increase sales on your home based business website is its security. Dont expect your customers to know and trust that your home based business website is secure, remind them every chance you get that any financial information they give you on your home based business website is secure. You also want to reassure them that you wont sell any of their personal information to a third party. Confidentiality and security are important to any e-commerce website customer, but its even more important when youre a home based business competing with the big dogs.

Too, you want to tell people as much about you and your home based business as possible. Web consumers are becoming a great deal more savvy than they were a couple of years ago and will often call home based businesses before placing an order. They want to hear a real persons voice when they call. If you use an answering machine or service, make sure you return a prospective customers callthat is if you want to make a sale for your home based business product or service. And have names and pictures of yourself and any staff you may have posted on your home based business website so that people have an idea of who you are. People like to know who theyre buying from, especially when theres no instant top-brand recognition associated with a home based business.

And remember that your home based business website is equivalent to a corporate brochure. You want to include as much information about your home based business on your website as possible, but the language doesnt necessarily have to be businesslike or authoritative, and never talk down to your web customers. Keep your home based business website copy conversational, informative and as friendly as you can. Because the more people know about and the better they understand your home based business product or service, the more likely they are to buy it. If writing is about as much fun for you as going to the dentist, you may want to hire a freelance writer through an outsourcing site like Elance or Guru to help you develop the content of your home based business website.

Promotions and free offers are also good ways to entice your home based business website customers to buy. Special discount prices are always a crowd pleaser. And if your home based business has a product that you can have a buy one, get one free, or even 50% off, are excellent incentives to get people to buy. You can also give away something for free like a special e-book or how-to report that gives information pertaining to your home based business. Free is, after all, the magic word of the marketing world. These sorts of offers are a great way to stimulate sales any time your home based business website sales go into a slump or simply need a boost.

And always give your home based business customer a reason to come back to your website. You want to keep your home based business website content fresh and add new articles, information, reports, etc., as frequently as possible. The reason many home based business websites fail is because theyre neglected. When people return to your website and see that nothing has changed or been updated in any way, they wont likely give you a third chance. And you can totally forget getting a fourth chance. Theres a lot of competition out there on the superhighway. For your home based business website not to be passed by, dont neglect it, and your customers wont neglect you. And the more times customers visit your home based business website, the greater your chances are for making those sales!

Earn Money Online And Work At Home Based Business

Everyone loves money. Every day there is more and more ways to earn money. One way is to earn money online. There is hundreds of ways to earn money online. I hope to guide you through some of the ways to earn money. I will also inform you on some of the scams that say you can earn lots of money with little work. Hopefully you won't fall victim to any scam and wasting time and money. One key thing to remember is if you find any money making opportunity that asks you to pay money before you can earn money it probably a scam.

There is many ways to earn money online. I will go over some of them for you. Paid to read email is one of the best ways to earn small amounts of money online. Paid to read email sites that will pay you usually pay you 1/10 of a cent to 5 cents per email. If a paid to read email site says they pay 1 dollar to $500 per email is usually a scam and will not pay out, so try to stay from those. Also you might stay away from high payouts unless they have proof that they pay.

To earn money online you can fill out surveys for money. Some survey sites let you earn points and later exchange them for cash.Other survey sites will pay you cash. There are also survey sites that give you merchandise for filling you surveys. Some sites say you can earn up to $250 per survey, but they ask you to pay them money to get the surveys. I would stay away from those sites unless you have money to blow(but who does). You can earn money by selling things on Ebay. By being an affiliate can earn you money. This way is the easiest way to earn money online and affiliates are in high demand.

Every company loves affiliates because affiliates get the sites seen by lots of people. There are all kinds of companies who use affiliates and they range from adult to wal mart and every thing in between. Affiliate sites usually pay you per click of per sale. If you have excellent computer skills you can earn money by designing banners and designing websites. There is good money in reselling software. You buy software and than you can resell if for any price. You can earn money online by surfing the web. Some surfing sites have you install a tool bar that keeps track of the amount of time you spend online and pay you for that time. They usually pay well and you don't have do anything. This is great because you are going to be online why not earn money for being online doing what you want. The other way to get paid for surfing is joining a program such as SAS. They pay you for visiting sites and you also get hits to your site if you have one. These surf programs usually pay 0.50-1.00 for 1000 views.

With many mom's opting to stay at home with their children. This has given rise to the home based business. I the past the only home based business out there were Avon, Tuppware, Mary Kay, and Amway. Those businesses were for women and left men out of the picture.

The internet has given the men an equal chance to stay at home and work. You can work at home doing almost anything. I will go over some opportunities for you. One of the biggest home based business is Specialty Merchandise Corporation also known as SMC. They have been around for for years and started with mail order products than moved to the internet. The good thing about them is you make profits ranging from 100%-300%.You don't have to carry an inventory they do it for you and they do the shipping for you too. SMC also provides you with a personal business coach to help you every step of the way. Now you may have heard of the data entry and typing jobs that are out there. Well guess what they are a scam because they make you pay to work for them. You do not have to pay to work at home. When looking for jobs where you can work out of your house you need to know that you do not have to pay to get a job at home. The work at home jobs you should avoid are typing, envelope stuffing, processing refunds, making crafts, chain letters, and medical billing. All these jobs require you to pay fees to work at home. You do not need to pay to get in on a good work at home job. You can start a home based business on anything from a day care center to writing on things you know and everything in between. You need to find the right home based business for you. A lot of businesses ran out of the home fail because of the down times and you will have up times, but in the beginning you have more downtime. With all these opportunities around it is hard to choose one. Your best bet for a home based business is any idea you have in your head. Most people don't want to act on their idea because they think the idea is dumb. The only dumb idea is the one not acted on.Your best tool you have is your brain and thinking is hard work and tiring, but if you think about what you want to do and you will be a success. You need to think about what you are going to sell. You need to research what people want. You need to think where you are going to advertise. You need to think what you want your ad to say. You need to think about what you want to write articles on. All that is why you need to use your brain. You can not put your home based business on auto pilot and expect to earn good money.

In conclusion,no matter how you choose to earn your money there will be a scam waiting to grab you and part you from your money.Keep your eyes open and you won't get taken for a ride you don't want to be on. You can earn money online for doing just about anything. If you have a good plan for a home based business go for it, but remember that it takes time to really get going. Use your brain and you can go far. When you start to earn money you will see that everything you put into your home based business pays off. Start off small than grow bigger. If you start small you won't loose much and you will be able to see your growth. If you want to start big and you don't grow you will be disappointed. Take it slow and you will earn more and more. If you find some one to help you make sure you can trust them. I hope you walk with a better understanding on how to earn money online. Here's to you and all your success. May you be successful.

Starting an At-Home Big Money Business

Starting at home has many advantages.

When you start a business, like any venture in life, you want it to have the best chance for success. Starting one from your home has unique advantages.

You won't be paying rent on a store or office. And probably you won't immediately need a separate phone with the charges for installation and monthly service. And you are already heating and lighting your home. Therefore, you avoid the burden of these additional monthly overhead costs.

You'll be using many things you already own so you can save money by not buying a desk, lighting fixtures, a water cooler, or the other furnishings people generally buy to set up a separate business location.

If you need help with the actual work that's involved, try to get members of your family to help you (more on this later). And you can start your business part-time while keeping your present job. Later as it grows you can make it your full-time occupation, and if you wish, move it out of your home into larger quarters...better suited to a business which may be growing by leaps and bounds.

Presiding over your own domain

A man's home is his castle--and it can also be his "gold mine." There are many people who make a very good living right from their home. It's comfortable, it's conveniently located (you can walk to work in about 15 seconds) and you can dress the way you like. You can arrange the furniture to make a work space that suits your exact needs and tastes. You can choose the hours you wish to work and, if you have the energy, initiative and ambition, you can even be in more than one kind of business!

Working in your home has other advantages; you have no transportation expenses and you don't waste time or energy in crowds or rush hour traffic. You don't have to worry about getting along with a large group of co-workers or finding a decent place to eat lunch. And you don't have to go out in all weathers, sleet and snow or broiling sun.

But there are some drawbacks to working at home and the largest of these is self-discipline. You must learn to discipline yourself. Everyone who is his own boss has the problem of utilizing his time and energy most effectively and not wasting time on pet projects that are not essential to the business. Self discipline is easier to attain if one goes each day to a separate place of business because most business premises do not have the comforts, conveniences and distractions that one has in one's own home. The danger in working at home is that the advantage of comfort and convenience can turn into a great disadvantage.

Set up a definite work area

Later on we'll tell you some tips on how to conduct business in general. But let's first find a part of your house that you can use as your business or work area. It should be a spot that is comfortable but away from distractions. Your children deserve attention but not during your working hours (more on that later) So set yourself up far from where the kids usually play. Too close to the kitchen isn't wise because you are too close to the "food or drink" temptation. A quiet spare bedroom can be ideal as can a finished basement or garage if they aren't too hot or cold. You may need an extension phone put there and, indeed, after your business gets rolling you may want a separate line just for business.

If you have a spare desk or table that's fine, but a card table can do for a starter. Adequate lighting is necessary and a filing cabinet also is a good thing to have on hand. You can add whatever other business devices and equipment you discover you'll need as time goes by.

You and your Family

It will be necessary to explain to your children that even though you are at home, you are, in a sense "not at home," that you are working. This does not apply to an emergency, of course, but for nearly all ordinary moments it means they are not allowed to disturb you. You may even have to lock the door that leads to your work area.

On the other side, there is the situation regarding other adults in the household, from whom you might want some help from in running the business. This has been called the "honey-do" problem: honey, do this; honey, do that. It's best to come to some understanding with your spouse (and any other adult in your home) about just how you are going to handle this problem.

It's quite sensible to desire the help of those other capable adults because they can take some of the burdens of the business off your shoulders. However, from both a business viewpoint and from the human relations viewpoint, it's best to have a clear understanding with each of them as to what kind of things they will and should do (answer the phone, open mail, pack and ship merchandise, etc.) and what they definitely are not to do make payments to people without your authorization, make agreements, deals or contracts without asking you). Such advance agreements can avoid a lot of aggravation and make everything go much more smoothly.

"Hello, this is Daddy's business"

You must realize that there will be some (charming) complications to running a business from home and one of those complications is when a fairly small child answers the phone for a business call. "No, this isn't the Smith Company, this is my house" may throw a business associate calling your "office" for a loop, temporarily. Most people react quite graciously to this, but it does point up the advantage of having a business number that rings only in your work area.

Getting temporary help

There may be more work at times than you and your family can do yourselves. Your volume of business may be greater on certain days of the week, certain times of the month, certain seasons of the year. At those times you may need extra help to handle the work. Or you might need a bookkeeper or secretary or clerk one week a month to help you keep up-to- date on your record-keeping and paperwork. When you need such help, the most convenient way to get it is to hire someone through an agency that provides temporary workers. Manpower and Kelly Girl, for example, are two of the best known agencies in this field. Hiring though such an agency has these advantages: they will send a person who has the skills you require which means you won't waste time training the person. The worker they send understands that the job is temporary and won't make you uncomfortable by asking to be kept on permanently.

And, because the worker is employed by the agency (not by you) the agency takes care of the worker's payroll records, tax deductions, insurance coverage, fringe benefits, and so on. You are free from those responsibilities.

The right business for you

When selecting a home business you should consider these factors:

* Is the service or product you intend to provide already easily available in your area? If it is not available and if there appears to be a need for it, these factors are in your favor.

Consider all the things you own that might be used in some way as equipment for your business: a car or truck, a typewriter, a mimeograph machine, and so on. I you can use them, it will greatly lower your starting costs.

* Is it a business that suits your personality and tastes? One that you feel good about, that fires your imagination? It should be. Enthusiasm can be a priceless ingredient in the formula for success! Home businesses that work

You must, of course, choose the home business that is right for you. There are many books that will give you long lists of potentially money-making businesses for you to consider. A relatively short, but highly recommended, list of potential business ventures will be found in another of this series of reports entitled 37 Instant Moneymaking Part-time Businesses.

Handwriting analysis by mail. A great little business to operate from home. First off, study up on the subject; it isn't too difficult to learn, and it's interesting. You will find lots of books on the subject at your local public library.

Once you've started studying, you can start placing some small- space ads, in local papers, and in literary-type magazines, psychology magazines, and wherever else you think you can find the people interested in having their handwriting analyzed. Then you just sit back an wait for the letters (and checks, money orders and plain old cash ) to roll in. Be sure to keep a record of how much you get from which ad (by using a key, such as changing your middle initial in each ad), so you know which pull best.

After you get more confidence in making rapid analyses, you can even give personal consultations in your home if you want to do this.

Guaranteed lucky four-leaf clovers. It used to be that people thought they would be lucky if they found a four-leaf clover when they were walking in the fields. Now some smart farmer, who must also be a good businessman as well as a skilled plant biologist, has figured out a way to get exclusively mutants, so he can supply unlimited four-leaf clovers.

You can cash in on this handsomely by buying a quantity of them and embedding them in clear plastic (casting resins and instructions can be obtained at any hobby shop), in the form of key rings, brooches and paperweights (or anything else you can create.)

The real gimmick comes in the merchandising of them, because you should advertise them as guaranteed lucky genuine four-leaf clovers, with the slogan "If you don't get lucky in the next year with this genuine four-leaf clover, we'll give you your money back". Within a year most people have at least one good thing happen to them, so you will probably get very few requests for money back. Instead, you are likely to have lots of satisfied customers who feel that now they have finally gotten lucky, proving that the four-leaf clover worked! With this approach, and an attractive small-space ad, you ought to do well with four-leaf clovers.

Online Business Start-Ups: The Agony & The Ecstasy

Any business start-up can be difficult but the online business start-up is more so. Both business owners have the same problems of financing, product selection and marketing. However, the brick and mortar business owner has one major advantage over the online business start-up. The conventional business owner can see their potential customers. Their potential customers walk by the windows every day. They may even walk into the store and ask questions. With an online business, other than some hard to decipher website statistics, the only time you know you have a potential customer is when they contact you or order from you. This creates many sleepless nights.

At 2:00 a.m., an online business owner wakes up in a cold sweat. Where are the customers? Have I chosen the right online marketing strategy from the millions that are available? How do I know? Will a sale come in tomorrow or never? There are literally hundreds of concerns made more difficult by the invisibility of the potential customer. The agony of the online business start-up is in full swing. Will there be any ecstasy at the end of the road? What will it take?

Ecstasy will occur once the owner knows the business is successful. The elements of success are actually the same for the brick and mortar business as they are for the online business. The difference resides in the feedback mechanisms. The online business owner cant count on that face-to-face meeting with potential customers when they enter the store or that fleeting glimpse of a customer as they walk by the window. An online business owner must create feedback mechanisms on their website which encourage customers to interact and let him/her know they were there.

Wouldnt it be nice if you could get your potential customers to leave you their email addresses? Not only would this help you understand that people are actually visiting your site but it would also be helpful for future marketing efforts. As online business owners, how can we do this?

First, add a simple guest book to your site. Some people will voluntarily sign your guest book, but many will not. So, lets add a little incentive for the potential customer. How about associating their signature in your guest book with a free drawing for one of your products (like www.sweet-vibrations.com, a one-of-a-kind jewelry site) or a free newsletter on an interesting topic (like www.aaronzwebworkz.com)? In this way, you offer something of value in exchange for their email address. And, it doesnt have to cost you anything.

There are many free website guest books available online. We use a free guest book from www.htmlgear.com on our website www.obinstitute.com. Check it out!

Secondly, an online business owner can also add a refer-a-friend link on their website. Why not offer potential customers the ability to easily market for you? They may know a friend who would really be interested in your product. That friend might buy something from you, or sign your guest book. The website mentioned above, www.htmlgear.com also offers a free refer-a-friend link for your website. And, again, you can check out an example at www.obinstitute.com. Is there anything else we can add to a website to make our potential customer more visible before a sale? Yes, an online survey.

Thirdly, add an ongoing survey form regarding issues of importance to your potential customers? Most of us find its interesting to cast a ballot on an issue and then see what position others are taking. Remember, you have two purposes in mind for this strategy. The first is to make the potential customer and their visits to your website more visible to you. This will help maintain your sanity until someone actually orders. But, secondly, you are developing a website that people will return to in the future. This will increase the potential for sales.

Each time the potential customer interacts with the website, using a guest book, a survey or a refer-a-friend link, the online business owner is building a relationship with that potential customer. The more they like using your site, the more likely they are to return. The more often they return to your site, or tell others, the better your chances of the sale.

Effective methods of doing business online!

With all these dot com failures so rampant, you may question, is it still viable to consider an online venture? The truth is: while spectacular rise and fall of many dot com companies have been overly publicized, sales through Internet are still increasing by 20 25% each year. Even economic down turn of the recent years has not hampered this growth.

Consider this:

According to an annual study of Internet trends by marketing research firm Ipsos, almost two third of Internet users in the United States have by now purchased a product or service online. Thats a dramatic increase from only 36 percents of respondents in 2000. Studies show that more than 35.5 million U.S. Internet users made shopping trips to web shops during the week ending November 3, 2002, which is roughly 14 million more than almost the same time period in 2001.

While the hype over the new economy is maybe over, one thing is for sure that Internet has revolutionized the way we do business and positioned itself as one of the biggest and most unique sales channels. Many companies, finally, started to realize that their very existence may get jeopardized if they are slow in integrating Internet to their business model.

But the question still remains - is there any effective method of doing business online?

Below I have outlined some components crucial to any online venture. While these might not be the only vital components of web based business, understanding them correctly will significantly improve your chance of doing online business effectively.

Business Plan

Business plans are like road maps. Imagine, you ended up in a unfamiliar town and you have to find an address without a map! How would you feel? Definitely, you would have been much better off with a map of the locality! The same thing goes for business plan. Though, many successful ventures may have been started without the benefit of a formal business plan, a good business plan improves your chances of success and help you avoid many mistakes.

A recent AT&T study of successful entrepreneurs shows that businesses are more successful if they have a written business plan than the ones which dont. With a written business plan you get a better picture of your planned venture. So, before starting you online venture, take some time and write down what are you planning to do.

Product or Service

If you are a brick and mortar company merely trying to expand sales of your products or services on the Internet your task is easier! You at least dont have to mull over what to sell. But, what an entrepreneur who decided to start a new venture should sell on the Internet?

Actually, you can sell virtually any product or service through the Internet. You may say, "Wait a second, you cant sell big ticket items over the net, right?" Wrong! The car and part industries alone forecast to generate US$ 274 billion in revenues from online trade by 2004. There are incidents of consumers buying corporate jets online!

If you are serious about starting an online business, finding a product or service that suits you should not be very difficult.

Knowledge base products like e-books, how-to-reports and hard to find information and data sell quite well on the Internet.

Drop-ship items are bountiful on the Internet.

Thanks to global reach of Internet finding manufacturer for any item that you plan to import to your country or export from your country became lot easier.

If you have expertise, online services similar to web design, travel arrangement etc. are also good sales.

Internet users are paying readily for various types of online contents. Global online content market will add up to 50 billion US$ in 2003. You can consider this too!

Website/ Web store

Since you customers take their decision, whether to do business with you or not based on what they see on your site, it is critical to have a professional-looking website with good related content.

You can choose your website according to your need from a vast range of choices. Starting from a completely free website you can shell out thousands of dollars for a decent e-commerce website. The choice is yours!

There are various quality portals that allow you to have products and services displayed on a single page web site for free. Many business to business portals provide with this kind of services. However, for real time transactions you will still need e-commerce web stores.

If you are not good at design or dont want to spend a fortune on you web store, you should think about getting an e-commerce stores from web enablers like Yahoo, Bigstep, etc.

For a nominal monthly fee you can have the facilities required to run a full fledged electronic storefront and build it yourselves from easy to use templates.

If you go for this type of services, compare and see who has most of the features for lesser price. Some business to business portals along with your e-business web store will furnish you with necessary features to carry out over the Internet many important parts of buy and sale processes.

Shopping carts

The integral part of e-commerce sites, which allows you to accept product purchase orders for multiple products or services, is called a shopping cart.

The term "Shopping Cart"is taken from real life shopping terminology to help users understand the actions available to them. Like in a supermarket a user can add products to shopping cart, remove products from the cart or adjust the quantity of the products as per requirement before checking out and making payments.

While looking for shopping carts for your e-commerce store, you should consider the following aspects of a powerful and functional shopping cart:

Access to the shopping cart should be clearly visible. There should be several entry points to the cart.

Add, remove and adjust quantity of the product features should be prominent on the cart page.

The item name should have a link to the description of the product.

There should be a way of saving items for future purchases.

Shipping and other costs should be clearly stated before the check out process starts.

Order forms should be simple and clear.

All payment options should be explained clearly.

Ordering process should be done through secure server. You know you are on a secure server when the URL of your browser indicates "https:". The s at the end of http stands for "secure".

Merchant Account

90 percents of all online retail sales take place through credit card transactions. According to industry statistics, the average credit card sale is $40 versus just $9 for the average cash sale. To offer the credit card payment option to your online clients, you need to set up a merchant account-a bank authorized account established by your company to receive the proceeds of credit card purchases.

Even if you already accept credit cards for your offline transactions, that may not be enough. Although, you can take many precautions to reduce online credit card frauds, credit card companies still consider Internet transactions to be riskier than offline transactions. Thats why finding a right merchant account provider could be a little bit more complicated than you might think. Things could be even trickier if your business is located outside of the United States.

There are many middleman merchant account providers on the Internet. Do some comparison-shopping before you sign up with any of them as conditions that they offer vary significantly.

Although, it is definitely good to have a merchant account that does not mean you cant sell products or services without having one! There are numerous other payment options available on the Internet. Most popular of them are paypal, e-gold, e-bullion, etc.

If you would like to have an effective online business, remember that old values still count. Proper planning, uncompromising customer service, integrity, hard work and persistence eventually will make your business successful.

Doing Business Online Private B2B Exchanges

Business processes are the building blocks of an enterprise. If one of these processes fails to live up to its expectation, business starts to flounder. How to minimize the risks, get a better monitoring of the processes and, at the same time, reduce costs involved? The answer is business process automation.

Although, automated business processes based on online technologies can create incredible value to existing business, many companies are slow to adopt technological innovations and reap benefits from them. However, lately, things have started to change! According to a recent poll conducted among mid size companies shows 52 percent of respondents plan to spend over a million dollar on business process automation. Large companies early adopters of online business processes have been immensely profiting from the value created by process automation. Intel recently announced that it saved one billion dollar last year alone thanks to online business process management.

In broader sense, business process management technology delivers solutions to understand, analyze and simulate business process models. Companies adopt this technology to streamline their business operations, lower overhead expenses, reduce maverick buying, reduce paper-based mistake prone transactions and get better control. The ultimate goal is to make the corporation a fully process-managed enterprise, transformed through strategy, design, realization and actual operations.

Companies require streamlining their business processes to help solve various crucial but specific problems, such as:

  • An electronic supplier, in order to stay competitive, requires reducing order fulfillment cost aggressively.
  • A merchant needs to reduce shipping time by better monitoring his inbound shipping.
  • A manufacturer needs to cut production cost by reducing manufacturing time of a key product.
  • A bank needs to develop and market a financial product faster than its competitors.
  • A large distributor needs to consolidate buyers and suppliers to bring efficiency to its business.

Although, business processes are wide in range; and there are many complex issues that require meticulous work, automation of some basic processes may bring notable result for virtually any company. These processes include supply chain, procurement, logistics, inventory control, etc. By adopting an online business to business exchange companies can streamline most of these business processes bringing added value to their operations.

A B2B exchange is a unified online platform, where buyers and sellers login to communicate, collaborate and make business transactions. A private B2B exchange, mostly, consolidates suppliers and buyers of a specific company, which owns and operates the exchange.

There are two ways of integrating B2B exchange to automate business processes. A company can participate in existing B2B exchange or create its own private exchange.

While for small companies, it is more viable to participate in a major B2B exchange that has required components, larger companies should consider creating their own B2B exchange.

The profits companies can reap from joining an existing B2B exchange or creating their own private one could be enormous.

Customer Base Development

A supplier, once registers with a B2B exchange, gets immediate access to a large community of prospective buyers of his products or services.

Increase Revenue from Existing Customers

Business process automation allows companies develop products faster, buyers get faster and easier access to product information, receive quicker response to their requests, get better customer support and may buy products online. These turn into more sales.

Add Profit from Value Added Services

Once the exchange is set as primary sales channel, available free resources can be used to create more value added services for clients. Some of the services that the exchange may offer also can be used to generate more value.

Reduce Order Processing Cost

The supply chain solutions of a B2B exchange may allow sellers to reduce order processing cost significantly. Studies show that cost of processing a purchase order can be reduced from US$ 70 down to US$ 6 only.

Sales and support costs

By automating sales and customer support processes companies can reduce over head costs over 25-30% easily.

Inventory keeping costs

Clearer visibility and forecasting ability allow companies considerably reduce inventory keeping costs.

Since an existing B2B exchange may not have all the necessary features and functions, a good option is to build a private exchange based on ones own specific business process automation need. This exchange, at its minimum, should be able to cover major portion of supply chain and inventory control.

The following elements should be integrated to create substantial value to a private B2B exchange:

Supply Chain Management

Supply chain management is the core solution of an exchange and can deliver great values to existing systems. Implementation of this solution will help achieve incredibly high return on investment. Business process automation in this component of the exchange includes both supplier and buyerside quotation, requisition, purchase order and invoice.

Marketplace

This is the venue where the exchange owner company will post their products for sale. A shopping cart should be integrated to the electronic marketplace in order to automate the buying process. The offered-for-sale products will be directly related to inventory control management component of the exchange.

Auction

Electronic auction system can use both English and Dutch auction methods. For convenience the auction component can be integrated to the electronic marketplace. Online auction helps liquidate surplus goods easily.

Reverse Auction

This solution allows automate electronic procurement, where suppliers compete for a business deal real time online.

Members Storefront

The participants of the Private Exchange both buyers and sellers of the exchange owner company get a Storefront that reflects profile of the company, their products and other information.

Forum

A Forum or Discussion Board is an organized, on-line interactive message board where participants conduct discussion on a set of topics by posting questions, comments and responses.

Directory of Companies

This is a listing of all registered participants buyers and sellers of the exchange owner company either by business category or by alphabetical order. An advanced search engine tool can be incorporated in order to find a company based on data provided.

Ecatalog

Ecatalog is a hierarchy of product and service categories. All products and services handled by the exchange owner company should be consolidated in the catalog.

Private B2B exchange is a powerful concept, which engulfs a fairly big portion of business processes requiring automation. This is more like a business ecosystem that has an ability to change the way companies think and do business and create tremendous value to their owners.

Home-Based Business For Fun And Profit

SELF-EMPLOYMENT AND YOU

The world of self-employment can be a personally and financially rewarding one for the right individual. Many people dream of owning their own business but don't believe it will ever happen for them. The majority of these folks see all the positives of working for yourself, but lack the drive and determination to make the transition from employee to employer.

Self-employment is the ticket to higher earnings without limit and the right to control and work your own schedule. But it's not easy work. A lot of self-employed people are working longer hours and weeks than ever in their own business. The difference is they are doing work they truly enjoy, and are getting paid for it!

You have the talent and ability to work on your own! Perhaps you're just not sure what business you'd like to specialize in.

Sales aren't just the slick folks on the automobile showroom who want to know what it will take to get you in that car today. Selling is the process by which a product reaches a consumer. It can take many forms. If you have some preconceived ideas about sales right now, erase them from your mind. Start with a clean slate by remaining open to all possibilities in your home-based businesses.

After all, if you're marketing a product you would buy yourself, it will be easy to convince others of its value. Since you're selecting the right business opportunity, you'll unquestionably choose the business that has the most appeal to you. Selling something you love almost never feels like work, or real selling!

HOW TO GET STARTED

If you currently have a job, you may want to break into your home-based business on a part-time basis until you've built up enough earnings base to leave. There will probably be no greater feeling than when you walk out the door and into a business where you call the shots!

If you're between jobs, then by all means go at this full-force. All you need to do is to contact the businesses listed here that interest you and begin the process of determining if this is right for you.

There may be several opportunities here that are franchises. There is no available data that says that electing to go the franchise route to start your business has any lower success rate than beginning a new business from scratch. Again, view these choices with an open mind and investigate the opportunity thoroughly before making the commitment. If you're working part or full time, you can, perhaps, be even choosier.

THE TOP 10 WAYS TO EARN MONEY AT HOME

1. ANTIQUES

The buying and selling of antiques has been and should continue to be a very productive business, financially, for those that do it. Here, you only need an extra room in the house, or the use of your garage -- and you have an office!

If you have a large home that has some antique furnishings, you might consider turning it into a showroom for your antique acquisitions and sales, providing you satisfy any local zoning regulations. The interest in antiques will survive into the foreseeable future. Many people choose to spend their free time on the weekends "antiquating" from place to place to try and pick up a few odds or ends and maybe a jewel or two. If you know anything about antiques, this may be a great opportunity for you.

For more information, check out the book, "Buying and Selling Antiques", by Don Cline and Sara Pitzer. Your local library may be filled with other publications on this subject that can get you started quickly. Your only overhead may be inventory and advertising!

2. BAKING

Have you ever been told that you have a recipe which people would line up to get if they could? Ever had anyone tell you that you should be selling those cupcakes you make? There are a number of success stories about people who have launched successful businesses by cooking at home and then marketing to local people first. Word of mouth on a good product may start to get restaurants or bakeries interested in acquiring your culinary masterpieces. Then you progress to selling them state-wide and presto! A winning home-based business!

For more practical advice on the assorted aspects of setting up a specialty foods business, you should contact your local U.S. Department of Agriculture Home Extension Agent in your county. Since every U.S. county has such an individual, that person shouldn't be hard to find!

3. BED AND BREAKFAST PROPRIETOR(S)

Have you ever stayed in a bed and breakfast and thought, "hey, I can do this!" You probably went on vacation and simply chalked your thought up as one of those pipedreams one gets when they stay in a beautiful spot.

Don't toss that thought away! While it's not easy work as the hours can be long and it's usually a seven days per week business, it's often something that you can work into a daily schedule. After all, it's merely an extension of doing the housework for family, right? More and more Americans are taking after Europeans and opening their homes to travelers. If you have an extra room or two since the kids moved out, you can start a bed and breakfast in your own place!

Bed and breakfast popularity will continue as more and more vacationers and business travelers seek a different accommodation away from the predictability of the average hotel room. If they enjoy their stay, many become "repeat" customers, coming back to the same familiar surroundings time and again.

If you don't need to do any major renovations in the house to accommodate this type of establishment, you can be off and running with very little money invested, other than advertising and some new "guest room supplies". If your dream is to buy a bed and breakfast somewhere in a vacation paradise, there are probably houses for sale that will work for this purpose.

Whatever your design, there are several good books on the subject of starting your own bed and breakfast, including "Start Your Own Bed and Breakfast", by Beverly Mathews. Check them out at your local library.

4. CHILD CARE

Due to the financial pressures many families face today, many parents work outside of the home to bring in enough income to pay daily living expenses. A single parent is obviously working but all too often both members of a two parent family are in the workforce.

This creates a home-based opportunity. Children must be watched, all day if they're not in school, or, otherwise, for a brief time after school before the parents finish work for the day.

Caring for one additional child may not be that lucrative, but taking care of several children can certainly be a full-time, financially successful business. Often, taking care of several children is made somewhat easier as the youngsters often will play together.

You can do this at home for only a small investment in basic equipment and toys for the kids in addition to the advertising of your business. There are several publications that address starting this type of business, including "Family Day Care", by Betsy Squibb.

Another resource is the Day Care Council of America, 5730 Market Street, Oakland, CA. 94608.

5. COMPUTER SPECIALIST

The advent of the computer age has changed the concept of self-employment. Having a computer at home has opened a number of opportunities for running your own business utilizing this equipment. Companies everywhere are "outsourcing" work that can be done by someone else on their computer, out of their own home.

If you're not that familiar with a computer, there are many low-cost (or free) seminars and classes that will teach you what equipment you need and how to use it.

If you're a whiz in computers, you may end up working as a consultant, writing programs for companies. If you're a beginner, you may find yourself able to obtain work as a writer, using your computer to produce copy that's easy to edit. You can also keep accounting and payroll records for companies on your computer's database.

Word processing software can be used not only for writers but for those that can offer secretarial services out of their house. Desktop publishing software can allow you to do newsletters for businesses and other organizations.

For more educational data, contact the Information Resources Clearinghouse at Syracuse University's School of Education, 030 Huntington Hall, 150 Marshall Street, Syracuse, N.Y. 13244. Their phone number is (315) 443- 3640.

There are a substantial number of good publications, too. Your local library will have several books on computer occupations. If you can operate a computer, you can find work in the information age today.

6. GARDENING

If you like working in your garden each year and growing vegetables for your family to eat, it's a definite possibility for home-based employment. Imagine clearing a little more space and growing more items that you can sell directly to the consumer.

Most produce stands will buy from you if your product is one of high quality. If you enjoy gardening, this could be your ticket! If you have some more land to use, do it! Plant what you can, when you can! Contact your local produce stands to ascertain their buying habits.

You can even inquire about your own produce stand if you have enough product. The more space you have on your land, the more likely you will be able to generate enough crops to run the business.

People love home-grown vegetables. They just don't have the time or want to be bothered doing it themselves. That's your open door!

For more information, consult books like "Plants for Profit," and "A Complete Guide to Growing & Selling Greenhouse Crops", by Francis Jozwik.

7. IMPORTER AND DISTRIBUTOR

There are a substantial number of products manufactured in other countries which can be bought inexpensively and sold here in the United States at a profitable level. The recent passages of the Congressional bills, NAFTA and GATT, may make it easier to bring in other products from other countries.

This is a business easily operated out of the home, depending on the types of stock you're carrying. You may have to rent some storage space, but the capital required to start should essentially be limited to the products you're buying to sell here.

Two good resources for you are:

* American Importers Association Membership Directory, 420 Lexington Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10017; and

* American Register of Importers and Exporters, 38 Park Row, New York, N.Y. 10038.

You can also look at books in your library such as "How To Make A Fortune In Import/Export", by Howard R. Goldsmith, obviously an optimistic look at this type of business.

If you know the type of product you want to import and the market most likely to purchase your goods, you have great potential for a successful home-based business.

8. INTERIOR DECORATOR

While this business will require you to be out and about, meeting with customers, it's the type of work many people would love to do. If you have a fascination for decorating a home, this could be your line of work.

Many people don't know where to start when they are remodeling or buying a house for the first time. If you have the knowledge of colors and patterns and what looks good together, plus the expertise of knowing where to get materials and furnishings, this can be a winning home-based business for you.

One excellent resource to consult is the "Interior Design Directory", available through Whitney Communication Corporation, 1050 E. 58th Street, New York, N.Y. 10155.

9. PHOTOGRAPHER

The sky's the limit here! Armed with your trusty camera and some good advertising, you can do weddings, models, family portraits, passports, student photos, local newspaper coverage; almost anything that requires a picture!

You can easily start this work, part-time, and work into full-time work based on your success and inclination. Not much equipment is necessary to get going as a camera off the store shelf can often do the trick today. Picking up a tripod and having a room sufficient for developing your pictures, and you're in business -- at home!

There are a number of excellent books available in your local library to get you started on the path of professional photography.

10. SEWING & ALTERATIONS

Many people love to sew. If you're one of them, consider offering this service out of your home. When someone buys a new outfit, it rarely fits perfectly, meaning some kind of alteration must be done.

People look long and hard to find reliable individuals to do their alterations. If you can sew, you're well on your way to opening the doors of this type of business.

One resource you can review is "Sewing for Profit", by Judith and Allan Smith. Or your library will have a handful of capable publications on starting up this type of business.

These are our suggestions as to the top 10 ways to earn money at home, enough to be a full-time self-employed businessperson!

But there are many other opportunities. The listings that follow may give you some other ideas you need to get started in business for yourself.
